Staring Into My Soul

Staring Into My Soul is the long awaited, first poetry collection from Jamaican journalist and poet, Curtis Myrie. Inspired by the global legacy of Dr. Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett-Coverley and shaped by the spoken word traditions of dub poets like Mikey Smith and Mutabaruka, Myrie’s poetry is a call to resistance, reverence, and the baring of raw emotion.

About Me

Where the Story Began

Jamaica gave me rhythm, poetry gave me voice, and journalism gave me wings.

Born in Jamaica when political independence was on the horizon and the poetry of Claude McKay, Dr. Louise Bennett-Coverley, and Derek Walcott were a clarion call, Myrie fell in love with writing.

At the age of 16, teacher Joe Kijanski planted the journalism seed, inviting Myrie along with friends Clyde McKenzie, Dennis Lyn, Donovan Green and others, to revive the school newspaper Blue and White and become its editorial team.
