On Saturday, May 10, the vibrant energy of the Jamaican diaspora was on full display at the Consulate General Jamaica Hi5 5K Run/Walk, held at the scenic Miramar Regional Park in South Florida. This annual event, more than just a race, brought together individuals of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate health, unity, and the indomitable Jamaican spirit.
It was an honor to stand beside the event’s ambassador, the distinguished Olympian Veronica Campbell Brown, a symbol of excellence and national pride. Sharing the day with her beautiful family—son Zane and daughter Avianna—added a heartwarming touch that reminded us all of the importance of legacy and togetherness.
A poignant moment was connecting with Joy Myton, wife of the late, great middle-distance runner Neville Myton, whose contributions to Jamaican athletics continue to inspire generations. His memory lived on in the footsteps of every runner that day.
Equally inspiring was a conversation with Juliet McLean, the event’s only wheelchair participant. Her presence and unwavering determination were deeply moving. Juliet embodies resilience and showed us all what true strength looks like.
We were also joined by cultural luminary and international dub poet Malachi Smith, whose presence underscored the deep-rooted connection between Jamaica’s cultural expression and its global community.
The event was more than a run—it was a celebration of community, health, heritage, and hope. It was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with purpose.
